As I walk my solo Caminos with William, my furry peregrino, my route is often determined by the location of dog-friendly accommodation.
So, during my recent Portuguese Central Camino de Santiago, I had to take the coastal route to Vila Do Conde. Unfortunately, this large Camino town didn’t offer any dog-friendly accommodation so I had to continue onto Povoa de Varzim and back track the next day.
The Big House in Povoa de Varzim more than made up for lack of accommodation in Vila do Conde, as Oscar, the owner provided such a warm welcome! We were given an upgraded room with our own kitchen and bathroom.

I had to smile when I spotted the sign below!
I’ve spent the last two and a half months wandering the Camino for Wild Camino with William. I do believe this is the dog-friendliest guesthouse on the Camino de Santiago!
If you are wandering the Portuguese way and pass through Povoa de Varzim, I guarantee you’ll receive the warmest welcome at The Big House!
Check out my book, A Wild Woman’s Guide to the Camino de Santiago for practical advice on preparing to walk the Camino de Santiago including snippets from my journey and stories from Camino pilgrims.
Please note – Accommodation owners are not aware that I review Albergues, guesthouses or hotels during my stay. I do not receive any financial benefit for supporting any Camino accommodations on my website.
